How To Feel More Comfortable in Your Own Skin

I’ve always been pretty lucky with my skin in terms of avoiding acne problems or other skin conditions I watched teenage friends suffer with as we were growing up. So has my mum. As have my siblings.

Other than the occasional break out, sparked by hormones or a bad spell with my diet, it’s been relatively smooth sailing.

Until earlier this year, I’m ashamed to admit that I didn’t pay much attention to my skin but then I started spending a lot more time in the gym, got busy with work and somewhere along the way, grew to resent the time I spent applying and worrying about make up. I stopped wearing make up a lot of the time and the freeing feeling that brought with it was exactly that, liberating.

Until I looked in the mirror.

When I looked in the mirror, all I saw in the reflection staring back at me was dull skin, old scars from those odd occasions nasty spots had appeared and one of my biggest insecurities, the dark circles that hold residence under my eyes and have done for as long as I can remember.

So off I went to Therapie.

On a basic level, for the sake of reviewing their services here’s how it went:

I went in for an initial consultation. They were patient, kind. They listened to my concerns and what I’d like to get out of the treatment. They recommended various products and sent me home with a variety of full sized products that I can honestly say, have transformed my skin and my skincare routine.

When I came back for my first of three treatments – I went for their signature peel – they respected the tone I set for the treatment. They chatted when I was clearly feeling chatty and was in need of human interaction (hello, self-employed life), they answered my many skincare related questions and they silently carried out the treatment when I accidentally fell asleep lying on the treatment table.

They took my feedback on board when my skin reacted to one of the products and helped me to find an alternative product to solve the issue. Honestly, I could go on all day about how amazing the entire team were.

But truth be told, they were so much more than just a beauty company with good customer service. They taught me how to be comfortable in my own skin. Both on a physical level in terms of the glowing effect their treatments and products had on my skin and on a mental level in boosting my confidence.

Before, when I heard people reference skincare as an important element of self-care, I’ll admit, I definitely rolled my eyes a little (sorry). But then as part of prepping my skin for the treatment and taking care of it afterwards, the staff at Therapie introduced me to Image Ageless Total Facial Cleanser. It’s a gentle exfoliant that helps to resurface and rejuvenate skin. Although a gentle product, due to the sensitivity of my skin they recommended I use it every other morning. Following this I would use under eye cream and then finish with my SPF – all products taken from the Image Skincare product range. Suddenly I had a skincare routine. Not only that but I understood what each product was doing to help my skin and took the time to learn about how to really care for my skin. Suddenly I understood why having a skincare routine resonated so clearly with self-care practices.

Those (every other) mornings, as I stood there massaging the product into my skin, allowed me two minutes to myself to really gather my thoughts ahead of the day. It felt like I was able to take time to do something truly for myself and to look after myself before the working day had even started. Those every other mornings, they made a difference.

It seems cheesy but I felt like I had a real spring in my step on those mornings. I felt as though I at least had my shit semi-together. I was more patient, more productive and those 6 weeks between each treatment felt like a lifetime every time. With each appointment I walked in a little weary and walked out glowing.

Over the course of those three treatments, I went from a girl whose skincare routine consisted of simply taking her make up off to a girl with a sophisticated, three-step skincare regime and a complete change of attitude.

In the end, my experience with Therapie was a different kind of therapy than I was used but therapy all the same.
